Physically assessing a baby is a critical skill for a lactation care provider to have. Depending on what background experiences brought you to the profession, this may be a familiar role for you — or it may feel very new. Either way, there are a few key points to remember to make your infant physical exam as helpful as possible for you and as comfortable and stress-free as possible for families. Below, Sarah Stilling, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and IBCLC, shares some advice from her years of experience examining babies. Always ask permission. It sounds obvious, but it’s often skipped: Ask the parent’s permission before you begin examining their baby. Just because a parent and baby are in a clinic or hospital setting, don’t assume consent ...

Amy Black BS, IBCLC

Amy BlackAmy Black has been an IBCLC since 2014. She was fortunate to be trained with two very talented and amazing IBCLCs at Fort Belvoir Community Hospital as a Pathway Three candidate from 2013-2014 in the DC area. Each of the women came from varying backgrounds in lactation, but between the two of them, they prepared her for her first job at another DC area hospital as she moved from postpartum to NICU lactation within that first year of employment. Premature and sick infants and their families are my her passion. Amy works with Pathway Three candidates at Lactation Education Resources, helping place them at US hospitals local to their homes through our Clinical Internship Program. And, last, but definitely not least, Amy's all time favorite job is being a mother.

Juntos Triunfamos

The Juntos Triunfamos Lactation Equity Scholarship

Removing Barriers to IBCLC Certification

There are more IBCLCs in the United States than anywhere else in the world. However, only ten percent of those IBCLCs identify as Latinx/Hispanic.
There is an urgent need for more bilingual Latinx/Hispanic IBCLCs in the United States. Evidence shows that having a lactation care provider whose culture matches your own helps significantly in meeting breastfeeding/chestfeeding goals and can help close the serious gaps that exist in maternal and newborn health outcomes for BIPOC communities.
At LER, we recognize that financial barriers are a major obstacle to achieving IBCLC certification. That’s why we’re excited to announce the Juntos Triunfamos Lactation Equity Scholarship, which will completely remove the financial barrier for one bilingual Latinx/Hispanic aspiring IBCLC in the United States every other year.

What It Covers

Juntos Triunfamos fully covers start-to-certification support for one aspiring Hispanic/Latinx IBCLC who is Spanish/English bilingual, including everything from lactation training to clinical hours to exam fees.

Who is Eligible

Candidates must:
  • Be aspiring Hispanic/Latinx IBCLCs
  • Be Spanish/English Bilingual
  • Have at least 40-60 hours providing lactation support in some capacity
  • Have a clear plan to impact their community with the credential
  • Be ready to participate in the multi-year process of completing IBCLC certification
  • Live in the United States

How It Works

Applicants must first be nominated by a current lactation care professional. Selected nominees will then be contacted with an invitation to apply for the Juntos Triunfamos Lactation Equity Scholarship.
