What you need to know about switching to LCTP v11
Why is LER updating LCTP?
To bring you up-to-date, accurate information based on the latest research and education techniques, LER is constantly identifying thought leaders and emerging stars in lactation. We bring together these subject matter experts and align their best teachings with the topics needed to pass the exam and provide high quality lactation support. Existing lessons are updated at least every three years, and more frequently when an instructor would like to integrate emerging evidence or new research that substantially changes how they present their lesson. New course versions are released when there are a number of new and updated lessons available for our community.
What is different about the new course?
The new course includes some lessons with new instructors, while others have undergone minor updates. Some lessons did not change at all.
Will I keep my progress in the course?
Yes! Any individual lesson that you have completed will be recorded in your updated course. For example, if you completed the lesson Anatomy of a Lactation Consultation, your progress will be recorded in your updated course. There are some exceptions (details below).
What if I am part way through a lesson?
If you have partially completed a lesson at the time of the transition, your progress will be saved if the lesson is the same in the two versions of the course. If you have begun a lesson with minor changes and would like the progress recorded, please complete that lesson before the transition. (See “Which lessons have changes, but will record a completed lesson?” below for a complete list.) Fully completed lessons will be marked complete, with the exception of those listed in the next section.
Which previously completed lessons will not be marked complete in the latest LCTP?
We want to make sure that you are equipped to both sit for the exam and provide evidence-based care. Where our knowledge of the field has changed significantly in the past few years, so have our lessons. There are a small number of lessons that have changed enough that, in order to ensure the information you learn is up-to-date, you will need to complete the new version of the lesson, even if you completed it already in the previous LCTP. These include:
- Plastic Surgery Procedures and Lactation
- Infant GERD and Human Milk Feeding
- Medically Challenged Infant
- Postpartum Recovery Section 1
- Postpartum Recovery Section 2
- Nutrition for Breastfeeding
We know this may mean spending more time in the course. We hope you will agree it is worth it to learn the very latest in lactation.
Which lessons have changes, but will record a completed lesson?
Some lessons have changed, but for various reasons (mostly because the changes were minor), your completed status will transfer to the updated course.
If you are in progress with any of these at the time of the migration, your progress will not be recorded. You are welcome to either complete the lesson now, or wait until after the migration and restart the updated lesson.
If you completed any of these in the previous version, you will find it marked complete after the transition. You might appreciate reviewing these, though, to learn what has changed in the field in the past one to three years:
- Clinical Skills Videos
- Engorgement and Mastitis
- Human Milk Composition
- Intimate Partner Violence and Lactation
- Infant Oral Anatomy
- Teaching Breastfeeding Classes
- When Breastfeeding Fails
- Facilitators and Barriers (this lesson has not changed, but is being split into two lessons for technical reasons. As a result, your progress will not be recorded.)
Note: Clinical Skills Videos and Human Milk Composition are the two courses with the most changes. We encourage you to review these two updated lessons.
I want to know ALL the changes.

Will I be able to go back?
If you discover after looking over the new course that you’d prefer to go back to the previous version, just let us know. We will be happy to move you back into the previous course, where all of your course progress will be unchanged.
