Tandem Breastfeeding
Nursing during pregnancy and beyond
Tandem breastfeeding (nursing two children of different ages) is practiced around the world, yet many lactation care providers encounter it with little formal training and even fewer evidence-based resources to offer families.
This course, presented by Alice Friedman, RN, BSN, IBCLC, draws on both current research and her own lived experience of tandem nursing to help you confidently support families navigating this deeply personal feeding journey, from pregnancy through the postpartum weeks and beyond.
Covered in this course:
- What tandem breastfeeding is (and what it isn't), including feeding during pregnancy, after adoption, and without simultaneous nursing
- Evidence-based benefits for the newborn, older child, and feeding parent, including immune protection, engorgement relief, and sibling bonding
- When tandem nursing is not recommended, including high-risk pregnancies, certain medications and infectious diseases, and when mental health or personal limits are affected
- Practical strategies for prioritizing the newborn in the early days, managing toddler boundaries, and positioning both children comfortably
- The central role of self-care, nutrition, and support systems in sustaining a tandem nursing relationship
Whether your clients are hoping to continue nursing through a new pregnancy or simply want to know what to expect, this course gives you the knowledge to meet them with up-to-date information, validation, and practical tools.
