Strengthening Breastfeeding as a Key Pillar of Food Security

Email
Key understandings and actions for change
Price: $36.00 USD

Breastfeeding is a pillar of food security—infants receiving their parent’s milk have access to a safe, nutritious source of food, even in times of crisis. But there is a flip side: As of now, exclusive breastfeeding is also an indicator of food security—families experiencing more food security are more likely to be able to provide their infants exclusively with human milk, while those experiencing food insecurity are less likely to be able to exclusively breastfeed.

Understand the complex interplay between food security and breastfeeding through a global lens, with this powerful course by Cecília Tomori, PhD, MA, BA, internationally recognized anthropologist, public health scholar, and breastfeeding expert. Dr. Tomori teaches through three case studies focusing on the COVID-19 pandemic, examining how pre-existing variables intersected with the pandemic in Honduras, Pakistan, and the United States to impact breastfeeding, first food security, and the health and safety of birthing and lactating parents and babies.

After this course, you’ll appreciate like never before how your work as a lactation care provider and advocate fits into the landscape of increasing global inequities, pandemics, climate change, and conflict—as well as ways you can help create change.
