Lesson: Trauma Informed Care for Lactation Consultants

Price: $24.00 USD

You’re seeing a new client for the first time, and something seems off. New parenthood is often stressful, but this client appears shut-down, silent, and detached. Or, they seem angry and aggressive, arguing with your suggestions and responding with hostility. What could be going on?

In this cutting-edge course, Laurie K. Scherer, MS, LCPC-S, invites you to consider the potential role that trauma may have in the lives of your clients. Whether it’s recent trauma (like a difficult birth), a long-ago trauma like childhood sexual abuse, or even generational trauma from family history, the field of psychology is increasingly acknowledging the role of painful experiences in shaping people’s lives and functioning. While previous models focused on diagnosing (what is wrong with you?), the new standard of care—trauma-informed care—focuses on asking, what happened to you?

This course enables you to bring this level of awareness to your lactation practice so that you will be able to:

  • Understand the history of how trauma has been conceptualized within psychology.
  • Recognize the signs that indicate a client may be responding to trauma.
  • Understand how trauma may make your client less able to advocate for themselves and reduce their sense of agency.
  • Listen with curiosity and elicit more information.
  • Skillfully intervene to help your client feel safer and more empowered.
  • Understand when to get additional help.
  • Pay attention to your own feelings and needs and care for yourself while you’re caring for others.

Scherer, a clinical professional counselor, possesses advanced certification in trauma. She also has previous experience as an IBCLC and as a peer breastfeeding counselor. Scherer’s expertise in both areas puts her in a unique position to understand how lactation professionals encounter trauma and how they can help.
