Oversupply
When more milk becomes too much
Oversupply is often treated as a "good problem to have," but for many lactating parents, it's a source of real physical discomfort, emotional distress, and feeding challenges that can strain the parent-baby relationship.
This course, presented by Deja'Lynn Hicks, IBCLC, draws on both current research and her own clinical experience supporting families in the Greater New Orleans area to help you confidently identify, assess, and manage oversupply across a wide range of presentations and family goals.
Covered in this course:
- What oversupply (hyperlactation/hypergalactia) is and how it differs from a strong milk ejection reflex or normal fullness, using ABM clinical definitions
- Signs and symptoms in both the lactating parent and baby, and how to differentiate oversupply from reflux, latch problems, or rapid milk ejection reflex
- Biological, hormonal, and iatrogenic causes and contributing factors, including prolactin sensitivity, glandular tissue variation, and pumping practices
- Evidence-based management strategies, including block feeding, positioning techniques, and regulating pumping habits
- When to refer to an OB, endocrinologist, or mental health professional
- The emotional toll of oversupply on the parent-baby dyad, and how strength-based, compassionate counseling supports better outcomes
When your client is overwhelmed by an overabundance of milk, this course gives you the clinical knowledge and counseling tools to help.
