Deep dive: Breast massage & mastitis care

Price: $48.00 USD

If you are ready to deepen your knowledge of how to care for the human breast, this conference is for you. First, you’ll delve into the topic of breast massage with an expert who has studied it in cultures around the world and developed her own techniques. You’ll explore how breast massage can be a vital tool in addressing pain and complications of milk stasis, and also how it can be damaging without the proper understanding. With the knowledge in this course, your clients will be in good hands–yours.  Next, you'll transform your approach to breast inflammation with the latest research that's reshaping how we understand and manage mastitis. Dr. Melody Jackson, a family physician, runs a specialized clinic supporting families with infant feeding and early parenting challenges, while teaching and mentoring at the University of Notre Dame, Sydney, and Al-Ayen University School of Medicine in Iraq. Dr. Jackson serves on the Academy of Breastfeeding Medicine Board and the Breastfeeding Medicine Network of Australia and New Zealand.

Included in the Conference:

Therapeutic Breast Massage in Lactation. Used properly, massage can reduce breast and nipple pain by 50 percent in 30 minutes, and can effectively treat engorgement, plugged ducts, and mastitis. However, techniques that are improperly applied can do more harm than good. This course covers Therapeutic Breast Massage in Lactation (TBML), Reverse Pressure Softening (RPS), Hand Expression, and Breast Gymnastics through photos, case studies, video demonstrations, and exciting exploration of current research. Instructor Maya Bolman, RN, BA, BSN, IBCLC, serves in Breastfeeding Medicine of Northeast Ohio, has worked with lactation care providers from cultures around the world who have developed manual therapy techniques, and has developed her own.

Navigating Breast Inflammation: Engorgement, Mastitis and the Evolving Science of Care.

The Inflammation Spectrum. Understand breast inflammation as a spectrum—from physiological engorgement through inflammatory mastitis to bacterial mastitis and abscess formation, with nuanced assessment for each stage

Clinical Assessment Across All Skin Tones. Recognize mastitis in melanated skin, using palpation techniques and visual cues beyond traditional "redness" indicators, supported by diverse clinical images from real practice

When to Treat vs. When to Wait. Master the critical decision points for conservative management versus antibiotic intervention

Challenging Traditional Practices. Critically examine common recommendations like "empty the breast at every feed," deep tissue massage, and routine antibiotic use—and learn evidence-based alternatives

Real-World Case Studies. Practice your diagnostic and management skills with scenarios covering everything from postpartum engorgement to recurrent mastitis, including complex cases that don't fit textbook presentations

This course transforms the confusion around conflicting mastitis information into clear, practical protocols you can implement immediately. You'll gain the clarity and confidence to provide effective, up-to-date care for one of lactation’s most common—and challenging—conditions.
