Physically assessing a baby is a critical skill for a lactation care provider to have. Depending on what background experiences brought you to the profession, this may be a familiar role for you — or it may feel very new. Either way, there are a few key points to remember to make your infant physical exam as helpful as possible for you and as comfortable and stress-free as possible for families. Below, Sarah Stilling, Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and IBCLC, shares some advice from her years of experience examining babies. Always ask permission. It sounds obvious, but it’s often skipped: Ask the parent’s permission before you begin examining their baby. A powerful learning tool for lactation care providers

LER’s Infant Mouth Model

Take the guesswork out of oral exams by practicing with a highly realistic model.
  • See, feel, and explore variations in infant oral anatomy
  • Build outstanding oral exam skills
  • Confidently assess both frenula and palates
  • Enhance your communication with parents

Product Details

Each TieLER includes:
  • A 3-dimensional model
  • Four palate variations (normal, high, channel, and bubble)
  • Four tongue variations
  • A fully illustrated booklet explaining how to use the model

How TieLER Works

TieLER’s unique design makes it easy to swap the model’s palate and tongue variations. Simply remove one and slide the next into place. Practice conducting an oral exam exactly as you would with a real-life infant, learning how the variations look and feel. Watch your confidence in your ability to perform oral assessments during consults soar!

Use TieLER with Parents

Use TieLER during consults to show parents what oral anatomy variations look and feel like in a hands-on way. Then invite them to assess their own baby’s oral anatomy alongside you and compare it to the variations. Equipped with clear information, they will be able to make decisions and co-create a care plan that makes sense to them.

Fast Facts About the IBCLC Exam

Knowing what to expect on test day can help. Here’s the run-down:
  • You will answer 175 computer-based questions.
  • The exam will have two parts.
  • Most of the questions in Part Two will be associated with an image (a photograph, drawing, or chart).
  • You will have four hours to complete the exam.
  • Within each part, you will be able to go back and review questions you have already answered. However, once you move on to Part Two, you will not be able to go back to Part One.
  • There are no penalties for wrong answers, so it’s best to answer every question.
  • Typically, between 70 and 80 percent of first-time test takers pass the exam!

Testimonials

  • Purchasing the IBCLC exam review course from LER was well worth the money. It prepared me adequately for taking the real examination. The answers were thoroughly explained with references. Invest in this product, you will not be disappointed!
–Aira Jae E., MPH, CBS, Georgia
  • I took the exam prep course through LER and it was super helpful. I loved the short review videos and the practice questions. Very comparable to the official practice test for $50 from IBLCE. Good value and I feel so much more prepared!
–Mary H., CBS, BS Ed in Communication Disorders, Utah
  • The best part of LER’s exam prep course was the ability to take timed practice tests repeatedly. I particularly appreciated the written conversations within QBank from fellow students challenging the questions/answers and the LER staff taking the time to thoughtfully respond. I learned so much from those exchanges, it made it feel more like a classroom setting and that I was not alone struggling with why an answer was correct.
–Donna R., MA, OTR, C-ELBW, NTMTC, CBS, New Jersey
  • The LER IBCLC Exam Review Enriched course has made me feel very confident in taking my IBCLC exam. The recorded lectures and Qbank are invaluable; I find myself consistently coming back to them throughout my studies. I feel this course was the most value for my money as I prepare and study.
–Stephanie W., BA in Public Communications, CBS, Virginia
  • I took the LER Lactation Consultant Training Program (LCTP) and Exam Review Enriched. The recorded lectures by knowledgeable presenters covered many of the topics covered on the exam. The most helpful was the exam review which allowed me to create custom practice tests with thorough explanations. This helped me build confidence in thinking through lactation scenarios and answering questions in a similar format to the actual test. I highly recommend these courses to those studying for the IBCLC exam.
–Leslie M., BSN, RN, RNC-NIC, CBS
  • The content challenged me, and I gained invaluable knowledge with the education I received through LER. Even though the content is placed on an asynchronous platform, I was not alone on my journey. Every lecturer offered their contact information if I needed help or more information regarding the class.
