An all-inclusive course on Infant Assessment, Growth and Development
This course, developed by Sarah Stilling, CPNP-AC/PC, IBCLC, differentiates between gestational age vs. chronological age and analyzes how to “correct” for gestational age. Sarah discusses key patterns of human development that influence milestone acquisition and progression, examines typical voiding, stooling and weight patterns in newborns 0-14 days along with identifying 'red flags' and articulates the differences in growth patterns amongst newborns, young infants, older infants and toddlers. In the infant assessment sections, Sarah highlights pertinent medical history for the mother and/or her newborn that could potentially impact breastfeeding, addresses terminology used to describe the relationship between newborn’s weight and gestational age and the post-natal implications associated with the different age/weight-based classifications, discusses abnormal vital signs or physical exam findings that would imminently impact a newborn’s capacity to breastfeed, reviews 6 different infant behavioral states and expresses how each potentially impacts breastfeeding and lastly, articulates both typical (including anatomic/physiologic variants) and atypical newborn physical exam findings.
